Starting on November 1, 2019 you can learn about the rare ‘spirit bear’ at the Great Lakes Science Center’s (GLSC) DOME Theater while viewing their newest IMAX film – the Great Bear Rainforest!
The Great Bear Rainforest is geographically located on the west coast of Canada between Alaska and Washington. The spirit bear is a white subspecies of the American Black Bear that lives there. A rare genetic trait gives it its white fur. But this movie isn’t just about the bears…
The Great Bear Rainforest has absolutely stunning imagery of large mountains, breathtaking forest rainfalls, beautiful images of the Pacific Ocean and incredible videos of the animals and sea life that inhabit the area. After three years of filming, the film makers captured the life of this region into a 45 minute IMAX video. The Great Bear Rainforest is a MacGillivray Freeman Films movie narrated by Ryan Reynolds and directed by Ian McAllister.
The Great Bear Rainforest has survived mostly untouched and natural due to strong cultural influence and rich biodiversity and ecology surrounding the area. The local First Nations have lived on this land for thousands of years and have protected it. The film explains this connection in detail with interviews from the current ancestors that still live on this land and work to protect it to this day.
I saw the film with husband and our children (age 2 and 4) and we all loved the film. Both of our children sat through the entire movie. My youngest was excited to see the spirit bear and thought that it was ‘Winnie the Pooh’, while my oldest loved seeing the younger children from the First Nations speak and also watching the wildlife – especially the scenes when the bears were fishing for their meals. Our family loved seeing this film together!
