It’s not a surprise to anyone that one of our families favorite places to go is the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). My husband and I have been going since before kids! We celebrated one of our wedding anniversaries there!  We’ve held a membership for the past 3 years and get SO much use out of it for our family.  

Incredibly Fun and Interactive Exhibits:

Past Special Exhibits:

Grossology was one of the first exhibits we checked out as a family and it really set the bar for the high quality, educational exhibits at the science center.  Last year, we visited “Vroom! A Car Adventure” at least 6 times with the kids.

*NEW* Curiosity Carnival:

This year, they’ve exceeded the bar again with their newest exhibit, “Curiosity Carnival“.  The kids are already asking to go back.  

First Floor Highlights:

When we enter the main floor of the science center, my kids ALWAYS go crazy for the floor projection! They enjoy ‘smashing’ the germs and making waves in Lake Erie. Of course, the NASA Glenn Visitor Center is a hit with my space loving kid – I personally love it too! My daughters run to the jump in the rocket every time.

Second Floor Highlights:

Upstairs, in the ‘Polymer Funhouse’ (which is designed for scientists ages 7 and younger), my children particularly love playing inside the colorful ball pond. They work with teams of other children to lift as many balls as they can into the giant bucket overhead before they release them all over their heads! The Magformer ‘blue prints’ with light up tables, giant gear table, and climbing the lighthouse are their other favorites. There is also a dedicated area for infants.

There are also several unique, interactive exhibits on the second floor – some which were from past exhibits such as VROOM.

We easily spend hours at the GLSC during every visit and we probably visit at least 6-7 times per year! It’s a great place to explore with the kids over the winter when it’s too cold to go outside.

Winter Wonder Days:

The center does an incredible job incorporating science into every holiday to make it fun, interactive and educational for the whole family! Over this coming holiday, there will be Winter Wonder Days (included with general admission)! It runs from December 26 – December 29.

Here’s an excerpt from their recent official press release about the event:

“Trade in some of your kids’ “screen time” for family time, and start a new tradition by exploring the hands-on activities, programs and demonstrations at Winter Wonder Days.
 
A new, hands-on “robo snowballs” activity puts guests in charge of maneuvering a robotic snowball through an obstacle course and tests their coding skills. Our laboratory will be transformed into a “penguin playground” where guests can engineer an igloo, experiment with forces and energy to bounce balls into the penguin’s den, and explore the center of balance in penguin bowling, plus fan-favorite carpet skating and a brand new Snowflake Science activity!
 
Spectacular feats of physics and the curiosities of chemistry await in a new Under the Big Top Science Show, along with experiments involving extreme temperatures, fire, and ice in the CryoBlast and Fire and Ice science shows.”

Winter Break Science Camps:

If you are looking for some educational opportunities for your children while they are out of school, check out the winter camps!  These camps run December 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and January 2-3.  There are several camp themes and dates available. These are paid outside of general admission but science center members receive a $5 discount on each camp.
