๐ As part of E-Week (Engineering Week), today is Introduce a Girl ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฟโ๐จ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐จ๐ฉโ๐จ to Engineering Day! ๐
๐ฌWomen earn 53% more of the undergraduate STEM degrees in the United States but women only account for a little over 20% of the undergraduate degrees in engineering ๐ฑ. We desperately need to increase this number. ๐ I’ve seen numbers that of those 20%, only 40% actually remain in the field long term.
โWhat is engineeringโ
Engineering is a degree in expert problem solving! Engineers solve some of the most complex problems facing the world today. They work to make the world a better place.
๐How can you help a girl explore engineering:๐
๐ Reinforce / encourage curiosity and asking questions!
๐ If you are an engineer, share your experience with other girls!
๐ Read engineering books like ‘Rosie Revere, Engineer’ or ‘How I Discovered Engineering’ by Diane Propsner.
๐ Volunteer for career days at schools to talk about your engineering career!
๐ Connect girls to STEM programs in your area like Science Olympiad, Girl Scouts , your local science center, SWEnext , etc.
๐ Introduce role models!
Let’s keep breaking down that glass ceiling and encouraging the next generation of STEM women! ๐ช
