π As part of E-Week (Engineering Week), today is Introduce a Girl π©πΌβπ¨π©πΏβπ¨π©π»βπ¨π©βπ¨ to Engineering Day! π
π¬Women earn 53% more of the undergraduate STEM degrees in the United States but women only account for a little over 20% of the undergraduate degrees in engineering π±. We desperately need to increase this number. π I’ve seen numbers that of those 20%, only 40% actually remain in the field long term.
βWhat is engineeringβ
Engineering is a degree in expert problem solving! Engineers solve some of the most complex problems facing the world today. They work to make the world a better place.
πHow can you help a girl explore engineering:π
π Reinforce / encourage curiosity and asking questions!
π If you are an engineer, share your experience with other girls!
π Read engineering books like ‘Rosie Revere, Engineer’ or ‘How I Discovered Engineering’ by Diane Propsner.
π Volunteer for career days at schools to talk about your engineering career!
π Connect girls to STEM programs in your area like Science Olympiad, Girl Scouts , your local science center, SWEnext , etc.
π Introduce role models!
Let’s keep breaking down that glass ceiling and encouraging the next generation of STEM women! πͺ
