In this post, I’m sharing a book review of a coding book for kids. The book is entitled, “A to Z Computer Science Activity Book“. It is written by computer engineer, Sakina Fakhruddin (read her interview here).

About the Author:

Sakina grew up in Kuwait and later moved to the United States. There, she earned her Computer Science degree, worked for IBM, and also received her technology certification from Microsoft. She is a strong supporter of organizations like Girls Who Code and Code.org.

She founded her own educational company, Codinu. The company teaches children how to code. It empowers them to change the world in an all inclusive, fun and collaborative environment. Read more about her in my STEM Career Interview.

About the book:

Sakina’s book is for children and the young at heart (ages 9 to 99 years old). The book is for those who want to learn basic computer science and coding vocabulary.

I found the book to be easy to read with appropriate coding vocabulary. An older elementary student could easily understand the definitions of each word. The activities are also easy to grasp. Teachers could also use this book as a tool to use in their classroom while teaching basic coding language.

The book is written with coding vocabulary starting from the letter A and ending at Z. Each page provides a description of the coding term. It includes a short, fun activity to help further the understanding of the word. It is easy to follow and understand and fun for kids.

Children can draw, color, sketch, do word searches, and play games! The types of coding vocabulary in the book include: A for Algorithm, B for Binary, C for Conditional, …, etc.

What did your little computer scientists think?

At the time of this writing, my children are just a tad bit young for this book. My oldest is 6. This will definitely be a great reference and teaching tool once they are a little older. It will be useful when they start learning coding languages!

I hope that you check out the book “A to Z Computer Science Activity Book” and Sakina’s STEM Career Interview!

You can also learn more about the online coding courses offered by Codinu. These courses are available for children starting at age 7. Find more information at this link.
